Overview
Jon joined Akula & Associates in November 2011. A Dallas
native, Jon previously worked in a number of legal environments,
including a small firm in Dallas and a large firm in Houston.
He has tried approximately 500 cases in Texas, California,
Michigan, and Louisiana. His first job in the legal field
was with famed criminal defense attorney Richard ‘Racehorse’
Haynes in Houston. Before going to law school, Jon worked
as a political consultant and in the men’s clothing
industry.
Jon was the only student enrolled at the University of Houston
Law Center to compete three years in both mock trial and
moot court. His honors include: Order of the Barristers;
recipient of the W.W. Watkins Advocacy Scholarship; Justice
Bud Warren Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Appellate
Advocacy; Trial Advocacy Institute, Excellence in Advocacy
Award; F. Lee Bailey National Moot Court Tournament, First
Place, Best Oralist; Texas Invitational Mock Trial Tournament,
Second Place, Best Advocate; Texas Young Lawyers Association
Moot Court Tournament, Third Place; John Black Moot Court
Tournament, Third Place. Jon also was Texas high school
debate champion while attending Hillcrest High School in
Dallas.
Jon is a member of the State Bar of Texas Labor and Employment
Law and Appellate sections, the National Association of
Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the National Institute for
Trial Advocacy.

Jon’s
practice focuses on civil litigation (including
commercial litigation, contract actions, debt
collection, employment law, civil rights, insurance,
personal injury, real estate, and landlord-tenant
cases). In addition, Jon handles criminal cases
in state and federal courts, including charges
of drug possession, DWI, assault, and theft.

Jon also has extensive
experience in civil and criminal appeals, including
a successful appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court,
Pfau v. Reed, which is considered a seminal
precedent in sexual harassment cases. Jon also
won an important First Amendment case in Los
Angeles, Marich v. QRZ Media, and he appeared
on national television regarding the case. Jon
represented a fired employee in the first appeal
in a Texas state court involving the Family
and Medical Leave Act, Haynes v. City of Beaumont. |
