Overview

Jon joined Akula & Associates in November 2011. A Dallas native, Jon previously worked in a number of legal environments, including a small firm in Dallas and a large firm in Houston. He has tried approximately 500 cases in Texas, California, Michigan, and Louisiana. His first job in the legal field was with famed criminal defense attorney Richard ‘Racehorse’ Haynes in Houston. Before going to law school, Jon worked as a political consultant and in the men’s clothing industry.

Jon was the only student enrolled at the University of Houston Law Center to compete three years in both mock trial and moot court. His honors include: Order of the Barristers; recipient of the W.W. Watkins Advocacy Scholarship; Justice Bud Warren Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Appellate Advocacy; Trial Advocacy Institute, Excellence in Advocacy Award; F. Lee Bailey National Moot Court Tournament, First Place, Best Oralist; Texas Invitational Mock Trial Tournament, Second Place, Best Advocate; Texas Young Lawyers Association Moot Court Tournament, Third Place; John Black Moot Court Tournament, Third Place. Jon also was Texas high school debate champion while attending Hillcrest High School in Dallas.

Jon is a member of the State Bar of Texas Labor and Employment Law and Appellate sections, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.

Representative Experience

Jon’s practice focuses on civil litigation (including commercial litigation, contract actions, debt collection, employment law, civil rights, insurance, personal injury, real estate, and landlord-tenant cases). In addition, Jon handles criminal cases in state and federal courts, including charges of drug possession, DWI, assault, and theft.

Jon also has extensive experience in civil and criminal appeals, including a successful appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, Pfau v. Reed, which is considered a seminal precedent in sexual harassment cases. Jon also won an important First Amendment case in Los Angeles, Marich v. QRZ Media, and he appeared on national television regarding the case. Jon represented a fired employee in the first appeal in a Texas state court involving the Family and Medical Leave Act, Haynes v. City of Beaumont.
